I’m reading through the pages for Belle as I call this novel set in 1777. Dear to my heart, here’s the gist of it:

A tale of courtship & marriage, duty versus desire, faith & forgiveness.

We’re up to novel 17 now aside from my 2 novellas. It’s truly amazing that each book is a small universe or world of its own. I can’t count all the different worlds I’ve inhabited since childhood as a reader. And then quite a few as an author. So grateful! Reading is the gift that keeps on giving yet in the 18th-century, books were very expensive & literacy uncommon. Most were just trying to survive, our ancestors among them. They wouldn’t believe how much has changed should they be allowed a look at our 21st-century lives!

What do I love best about The Belle of Chatham? My heroine’s name, for one. My hero’s abilities & heritage. The theme of patriotism. A quaint New England village & then endless New York frontier & last but not least Virginia…

One of my editors said it was an impactful read for her, that she was moved when I went a different direction than she expected. Here’s hoping you feel the same. January 2026 is just round the bend!

BAKER BOOK HOUSE PREORDERSALE

Sylvie Galant and her Acadian family are caught between the warring French and the English on Nova Scotia’s rugged, contested shores. When she encounters renowned enemy and Army Ranger, William Blackburn, Sylvie faces losing all she’s ever known as the British expel the Acadians from their homeland. Bereft of family and friends, she encounters William once again in colonial America and they must work through the complex tangle of their shared, shattered past to navigate the present and forge an enduring future.

During my last stay at Colonial Williamsburg’s historic lodging, this clever little sign on my door made me chuckle. But the truth is, the 21st-century is what I need rest from, not the 18th-century! Writing, a doorway to the past, has always been a blessed escape. So… what worlds am I in for the next contracted books?

January 2022

A Heart Adrift

The cover for my 13th historical novel is one of my favorites, compliments of Revell’s Laura Klynstra who has designed covers for New York Times bestselling authors. While it would be a dream to land on such a list, my real hope is that this sea captain hero & chocolatier heroine sweep you away in this next Tidewater tale that opens in autumn of 1755.

January 2023

The Rose &Thistle

I’ve finished & am editing/polishing my second Scottish novel due in January. My tentative title is The Rose & Thistle though my publisher might decide on a better title. I have a few most beloved stories I’ve written and this is one of them. Inspired by my Scottish heritage, this novel of a Lowland Scot and a Northumbrian heiress weighs in at over 400 pages. Cover art begins soon!

January 2024

Untitled

It’s always a joy & a challenge to begin a new novel. This time I go north before I veer south again with an Acadian heroine and a frontier hero. I have a stack of research books I’m wading through, taking notes, and combing through character names. I’m returning to Colonial WIliamsburg in the year 1755 and will also move west over the mountains. I love my heroine’s unique but period-appropriate name.

January 2025

?

Exciting adventures ahead!

When my debut novel released in 2009, I never dreamed my books would make their way to Dutch readers. But the Dutch were the first to pick up The Frontiersman’s Daughter as a foreign-rights edition. Over time the covers have changed. Some of the titles have changed, too. Here are four of my most recent releases in Dutch. All are unique and beautiful in their own way. I’m especially intrigued by the new look for An Uncommon Woman or Een Ongewone Vrouw. That’s not our heroine on the cover but Keturah Braam who is a secondary Dutch character in the novel yet who is truly the uncommon woman in this story. I created her as a way to thank Dutch readers for embracing my books. I hope her noble, selfless character delights readers everywhere!
