Dear Ellen, You make me want to come visit simply by your very lovely description! Such rich history in your region. Countless novel ideas come from there, too. Like you, I would never want to leave either. The James is truly magnificent and serene and Appalachia's ranges are my favorite of all I've seen in the US and Europe. That's saying something. Once I was called a 'visiting innkeeper' for vacationing B&B owners and count it a very good experience, too. We have much in common! Thanks for stopping here!

I always dreamed of living in a log house, and my wish came true in 1995, when my husband and I bought a log house outside of the town of Buchanan, VA. The house overlooks the James River and Appalachian foothills and is 25 miles north of Roanoke. I operated a B&B here for several years. I love the solitude, the wildlife, and the beautiful scenery (especially the gorgeous sunsets). I never want to leave.

I love that you have called one home, too! There is truly nothing like them, good or ill ;) And I have to say I'm again struck by your words about God being our interior decorator as well. Amen and so thankful for that! Bless you for being here and making this post worth writing, dear friend!

I have no doubt you will make your rental homey & beautiful, Cindy. All your waiting & hard work will make moving day especially fulfilling! Pigeon Forge is a favorite place of ours. Love thinking of you 3 there!

Thank you for sharing your home with us. I needed to feel that peace for a few moments. While our rental home is a far cry from peaceful Ilook forward to when our house is built and what each season will hold looking out my kitchen window to the rolling hills and cattle.
We will be in Pigeon Forge for Thanksgiving but are determined to make this temporary rental as Christmasy as we can.

In reply to <a href="https://laurafrantz.net/log-cabin-living/#comment-9158">Debrah</a>.

Dear Debrah, What an incredible, restful retreat! You are right, I believe the builder of our cabin knew the importance of time away and how conducive that is to wellbeing and appreciating the peace of a porch, the woods, nature, etc. I am so glad we have no tv here. Not even a radio. That way I can hear the wind and the fire in the woodstove. And the birds. Iowa is such a beautiful place. We crossed it on a road trip a couple of years ago and I told my husband I wouldn't mind living there. Thank you for stopping here and sharing wisdom and peace!

We were blessed several years ago to spend a few days in a cabin of some friends near a lake in Iowa. No television, beautiful cool mornings and sitting at the table eating breakfast while watching out the window as several does and fawns with the buck who was standing guard while they quietly passed. We heard the birds singing us awake and sat on the porch in the rocking chairs listening to the end of a day in the stillness of evening. We spend too many days rushing about and so few moments appreciating the Creation of our God. I believe those who lived in your cabin so many years ago may have had a better sense of the Creator as they thanked Him for that little cabin.
