*After years of trying many sugar cookie recipes, we believe these are the best. I get to make them more than once during the holiday season and they’re wonderful to give as gifts.
COOKIES
Cream together: 1 cup butter and 2/3 cup sugar
Beat in: 1 egg
Add: 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2-1/2 cups sifted flour
Mix all ingredients until well blended.
Chill dough 3-4 hours before rolling.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll out 1/4 inch thick and cut with cookie cutters. Bake 8-10 minutes or until barely colored. Remove from cookie sheets and cool on wire racks.
Cookies can be frosted and decorated or just eaten plain.
FROSTING
3/4 cup confectioner’s sugar (sifted)
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon lemon juice
Melt butter: combine all ingredients and beat till smooth. Add food coloring if desired.
Yield: 1/3 cup frosting
Hope you enjoy! Happy Thanksgiving & Merry Christmas!
Does the Kentucky Sugar Cookie recipe turn out soft or crispy cookies? Thanks for sharing!
Linda, Good question! I would say they’re more chewy. I have a recipe for the more brittle ones my granny made but the chewy, softer ones are my favorite. But I must say, sometimes it depends on the baking time and ovens. Hope you enjoy if you make these!
I always love to see your recipes. Thanks!
Happy almost Thanksgiving, Jeanne! So glad you’re a kindred kitchen spirit. I have my apron on and about to make these beauties. Bless you so much for being here đŸ™‚
Thanks for sharing! I’ve pinned this recipe to my Christmas Cookies board to try out this year!
So hope you like these, Kirsten! They are remarkably easy to make and that chilled dough rolls out beautifully. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas all rolled into one! đŸ™‚

Dear Phyllis, You make me doubly thankful, thank you! Praying yours is the best yet, my friend:)
Laura, these cookies sound great. Thanks for supplying the recipe! Putting lemon juice in the frosting has my mouth watering. I’m gluten free, but my family will love these. I’m tempted to try a batch with gluten free flour, too!
Rebecca, So understand being gluten free – so many other friends are, too! Glad for the GF flour you mention. I think these would be delicious with that. And you nailed the lemon juice detail – such a great add! I’m getting excited about the holidays, if you can’t tell:) Hugs, prayers, & happy endings!
This looks delish! I’ll try these out after Thanksgiving! I’m looking forward to it! Thanks much Laura! đŸ™‚
Happy Thanksgiving, dear Sue! I know it will be a merry feast at your house, both on table & in spirit. Treasure your friendship!
